While both types boiler heating systems operate using similar principles, their applications are different. Hot water boilers, also called hydronic heating boilers, are primarily used in heating applications. These heaters operate at a lower temperature than steam boilers, typically between 180 and 200 degrees. Hot water boilers are also noted to offer a greater degree of efficiency and produce more heat when compared to steam boilers. Hot water boilers also differ from steam boilers in that they must continually be filled with water and require a motorized pump to circulate the water. Steam boilers are based on an old convection heating technology dating back over 200 years. Steam boilers operate at a higher temperature than hot water boilers, which makes them less efficient than their counterparts. They typically operate at around 212 degrees. Steam boilers are designed for both low-pressure and high-pressure applications. The low-pressure boilers are limited to 15 psig, and are typically used for heating applications. High-pressure steam boilers are generally used for process loads and have an operating pressure of 16 psig to more than 1,000 psig.
