Evaporative Coolers DenverThere are many different types of equipment used to cool one’s home or business. One such type of equipment is the evaporative cooler. Also known as a swamp cooler, desert cooler, and wet air cooler, the evaporative cooler is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. These systems differ from typical air conditioning units, which use vapor compression or absorption refrigeration cycles.
In an evaporative cooler, a pump circulates water from the reservoir on to a cooling pad, which in turn becomes wet. The device’s fan draws air from outside the unit through the moistened pad. As the air passes through the pad, it is cooled by evaporation. This uncomplicated cooling system is one of the earliest known, and is still a popular and efficient method today.
Evaporative cooling systems have a number of benefits over refrigerated air conditioning systems. One major advantage of a swamp cooler system is that its operating costs are typically much less than those of a traditional air conditioner. Purchase and installation costs are also less expensive. From an energy standpoint, evaporative coolers use less energy overall, and at peak usage levels. No CFCs or HFCs are used with evaporative cooler systems. They are good in drier climates as they produce humidity and keep the air from becoming too dry. Also, doors and windows can be open with this cooling system, allowing for flow through ventilation and fresh air.
