Water Heater Systems DenverThere are several different choices of water heater systems available, and depending on how much water you use and how you heat the water will factor into which you use. Water heating amounts to nearly 20 percent of a home’s energy costs, and on a typical day a family of four may use 100 gallons of water or more for showers, laundry, and dishwashing.
The most common water heater system is the storage tank water heater. It consists of an insulated tank in which water is heated and stored until needed, and then pulled from a pipe on top of the tank. It has a temperature and pressure relief valve which opens if either element should exceed a preset level.
The tankless, or on-demand, water heater uses heating coils to heat water as it is needed, rather than storing water. They are more energy-efficient than a storage tank, but only provide a limited flow of hot water per minute. They are best for those who are drawing water from only one source at a time.
Heat pump (hybrid) water heater systems capture heat from the air and transfer it to the water. They use about 60 percent less energy than standard electric water heaters. Though they cost more than electric-only models, the water heater installation cost is similar and the return on investment is short.
Good for warm, sunny regions, solar water heaters use a roof-mounted cell to absorb the sun’s heat and transfer it to an antifreeze-like fluid in a closed-loop system that runs to the water tank. Most models employ a backup system that kicks in on cloudy days.
Condensing water heaters are an option if you heat with gas and need a unit with a capacity of more than the standard 55 gallons. These units have a tank similar to a conventional water heater, but capture exhaust gases that would normally be expelled through a flue.
